Precision Opto-Mechanical Process Engineer - Co Packaged Optics (m/f/d)
Join us. Corning is one of the world's leading innovators in glass, ceramic, and materials science. From the depths of the ocean to the farthest reaches of space, our technologies push the boundaries of what's possible. How do we do this? With our people. They break through limitations and expectations - not once in a career, but every day. They help move our company, and the world, forward. At Corning, there are endless possibilities for making an impact. You can help connect the unconnected, drive the future of automobiles, transform at-home entertainment, and ensure the delivery of lifesaving medicines. And so much more. Come break through with us. Our Optical Communications segment has recently evolved from being a manufacturer of optical fiber and cable, hardware and equipment to being a comprehensive provider of industry-leading optical solutions across the broader communications industry. This segment is classified into two main product groupings - carrier network and enterprise network. The carrier network product group consists primarily of products and solutions for optical-based communications infrastructure for services such as video, data and voice communications. The enterprise network product group consists primarily of optical-based communication networks sold to businesses, governments and individuals for their own use. For our location in Berlin, Germany , we are looking for a Precision Opto-Mechanical Process Engineer - Co Packaged Optics (m/f/d) Role Purpose As a Process Development Engineer - Co-Packaged Optics , you focus on developing and maturing micro opto-mechanical assembly and alignment processes for next-generation co-packaged optics products. Your primary mission is to develop automation-ready designs into robust, scalable manufacturing processes. You lead early-stage process development in R&D environments, defining optical and mechanical alignment strategies and validating automation concepts with a strong focus on cycle time, yield, and process capability. You operate primarily in early-stage and pre-industrial semi-automatied setups, ensuring that processes are ready for efficient transfer to internal manufacturing teams or external automation and production partners. Key Responsibilities Opto-Mechanical Process Development (Co-Packaged Optics)
- Develop and optimize opto-mechanical assembly and alignment processes for co-packaged optics (CPO) applications.
- Define and validate optical and mechanical alignment strategies, including passive, active, and hybrid concepts.
- Work, optimize and co-develop early-stage manual, semi-automated and automated optical setups
- Translate product and system requirements into stable, repeatable, and scalable manufacturing processes.
- Contribute to the definition of opto-mechanical interfaces from a process robustness and yield perspective.
- Develop optical assemblies and alignment processes on early-stage R&D and prototype automation setups.
- Analyze and optimize processes with respect to cycle time, yield, and cost drivers.
- Design and evaluate automation concepts for key process steps, including definition of KPIVs and KPOVs for critical process steps and establish suitable measurement and monitoring concepts.
- Prepare developed processes for transfer to internal manufacturing or external partners.
- Create process documentation, specifications, and acceptance criteria to support smooth handover.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Optics / Optical Engineering, Physics, or a related technical field.
- >5 years of hands-on experience in opto-mechanical process development, assembly, and alignment.
- Experience in co-packaged optics or closely related high-precision optical and/or mechanical assembly technologies.
- Several years in practical experience with early-stage automation, prototype equipment, or R&D manufacturing setups
- Experience defining KPIV/KPOV frameworks and inline or end-of-line measurement concepts.
- Knowledge of structured process development methodologies (e.g. DoE, FMEA) and history of developing processes from scratch with focus on yield, cycle time, and scalability.
- Fluent in English (spoken and written).
- Experience in process development with optical alignment automation (active alignment, passive alignment, Pick & Place, Bonding )
- Experience with fiber arrays, photonic integrated circuits (PICs), or advanced optical packaging.
- Solid understanding of optical alignment principles, tolerances, GD&T, and process capability.
- Familiarity with dispensing technologies, bonding processes, and precision handling systems.
- Experience transferring processes to external manufacturing or automation partners.
- Experience in CAD (Creo preferred).
- Company-wide bonuses and long-term incentive programs are linked to key business results, ensuring you're rewarded when the company succeeds. When Corning wins, we all win.
